The 2006 Report Card

Matthew Toomey

9 January 2007

To start things off, I thought I’d do what I’ve done in the past and start off with a report card on the previous year.  Enjoy.

Total films seen at the cinemas: 240

Best film of the year:  Capote

Worst film of the year:  A Sound Of Thunder

Best movie-making trend:  Australian cinema – it’s back and it’s great!

Worst movie-making trend:  Talking animals out of their element in animated films

Best movie-going trend:  The new Dendy cinemas at Portside in Brisbane and the low prices at Southbank/Balmoral.

Worst movie-going trend:  The ever increasing prices and lack of service at Birch, Carroll & Coyle cinemas

Films I thought I’d hate but actually enjoyed:  Casino Royale, The Holiday, Snakes On A Plane

Films I thought I’d like but actually hated:  Hard Candy, Fast Food Nation, The Black Dahlia, A Scanner Darkly

Films I reviewed highly which other readers seemed to like:  The Departed, Kenny, The Prestige, Casino Royale

Most important film of the year:  An Inconvenient Truth

The film that sent a shiver down my spine:  United 93

The biggest brain-puzzler of the year:  Hidden

I just loved seeing the shocked audience reactions in:  Shortbus

The worst movie moment of the year:  Crash beating Brokeback Mountain at the Oscars for best picture (a crime!)

Films I’m most looking forward to in 2007:  The Simpsons Movie, Pan’s Labyrinth, Letters From Iwo Jima

Films I’m least looking forward to in 2007:  Sequels (including Rocky Balboa, Are We Done Yet?, Evan Almighty)
