Overview
Built in 1970, this cinema has been around for some time and is located right in
the middle of the University of Queensland. On one night before a university
exam, I went along to see The Shawshank Redemption
for the first time (and I’ll never forget it). There are just 2 cinemas but the
whole complex is undergoing a major $6m refurbishment which is almost complete.

The Schonell show a lot of art-house films,
especially those in a foreign language. I think their films would be the most
obscure in all of the Brisbane – not a lot of demand for them but great
nevertheless. They also show a few films which have been out for a fair while
(and the reels have been picked up from the big multiplexes who are finished
with them).
Cinema Quality & Service
- 5 out of 10
Another old-style cinema which
will suit some but not others.
Des Partidge of The Courier Mail calls it his
favourite cinema but I’m not sure I agree. The
seats always seem squeaky and aren’t any holders for your drinks. Still, it’s a
great little cinema with many friendly people.
Parking can be an inconvenience with the cinema located on the university
campus. It’s probably best if you’re there on the weekends. One great reason
to go to the Schonell is for the Pizza Café which is
right next-door. They offer some of the best pizzas in Brisbane for just $10.
A relaxed setting made even better by the recent redevelopment.
