The week has arrived. After two years of dating, an engagement, and months of wedding planning, Charlie (Pattinson) and Emma (Zendaya) are set to walk down the aisle. It’s been relatively smooth… until now. The pair have a few too many drinks with friends Mike (Athie) and Rachel (Haim) and the conversation spins to – “what’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?”
Their respective answers aren’t particularly flattering but when it comes to Emma, who is last to respond, the reactions are not what she anticipated. I won’t reveal the “twist”, but it arrives at the end of the opening act and so audiences won’t be waiting too long. What follows is an increasingly chaotic chain of events that fractures friendships, asks deep questions, and jeopardizes the wedding plans.
The Drama is a difficult film to categorise and that’s part of the reason it’s so interesting. The title suggests “drama” but it’s also offering laughs and a kind of psychological horror-thriller. It reminds me of the saying “that I dare not look, yet I cannot turn away.” Norwegian writer-director Kristoffer Borgli (Dream Scenario) has created not just an uncomfortable situation for the characters… but also an uncomfortable situation for viewers. The fast-paced editing, jarring cutaways, and awkward music score of Daniel Pemberton (Project Hail Mary) will keep audiences on their toes.
Equally refreshing is the fact you’re never quite sure where the narrative is heading. My attention was held throughout in trying to speculate where Borgli would take things next. This ain’t no traditional romantic comedy! You can size up the deeds of this curious quartet and start picking sides. Who’s in the right? Who’s in the wrong? Zendaya (Dune) and Robert Pattinson (The Batman) are very good but the standout for me was Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza) who, as the maid of honour, is the catalyst for much of the mayhem. Her hypocrisy, if you see it that way, makes her an intriguing “villain”.
It’s best you know as little as possible going in. The Drama is an entertaining jaunt which asks us to reflect upon truth, understanding, forgiveness, and excessive alcohol consumption. Oh, and how much do you really want to know about your significant other?
