Mini Reviews

The Big Wedding (out now) is about a long-divorced couple who have to pretend to be married to appease their adopted son's biological mother (a devout Catholic) at his wedding. This film doesn't work. It plays it way too safe given the farcical premise. It needed more laughs and more interesting characters (ala The Birdcage). Grade: C.

Iron Man 3 (out Apr 24) looks like it's been edited by someone with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (too much going on at once) but that's a minor weakness. The film impresses by taking chances and offering unexpected twists – both dramatic and comedic. Iron Man is a fun superhero (so full of contradictions) and beneath his armour, Robert Downey Jr dominates once again. Grade: B+.

Song For Marion (out Apr 25) is the story of a "set his ways" old man who, against his better judgement, his helping his sick wife perform in an elderly choir. It gets a little silly in parts but there are some warm hearted moments (evidenced by a solo musical number from star Vanessa Redgrave). Grade: B.

No (out now) proves there are still plenty of great stories yet to be told on the big screen. Based on a true story, No centres on a young advertising guru working in Chile who tries to come up with a campaign to defeat Augusto Pinochet in the 1988 referendum. A worthy nominee for best foreign language film at the recent Academy Awards. Grade: A-.

Haute Cuisine (out Apr 25) doesn't dig too deeply into any of its characters but it's still a nice, easy to watch comedy-drama about a simple woman who is asked to be the French President's personal chef. It's based on a true story. Grade: B.

Olympus Has Fallen (out Apr 18) sees the White House attacked and the President kidnapped by a group of North Koreans who outsmart the very best of the U.S. Secret Service. Who will save the day??? So much of this film doesn’t add up and it takes itself way too seriously. I was also concerned by the stupidity of almost every character. If this is how their real life counterparts would act, we’re all doomed. Grade: C.

The Other Son (out Apr 18) is the story of two families, one Israeli and one Palestinian, who must come to grips with the revelation that their 17-year-old sons were accidentally switched at birth. This is a very good film that isn't coated with unnecessary melodrama. This is real, honest, life-affirming. Grade: A-.

The Company You Keep (out April 18) is a convoluted thriller that struggles to hold together. It follows a man (Robert Redford), on the run for 30 years following a murder, who is trying to evade the authorities and a young journalist. This may have worked better as a mini-series. There are just too many subplots crammed into the two hour running time. Grade: C+.

Scary Movie 5 (out now) proves that you don't need talent or a script to get a movie made in Hollywood. There's hope for me yet. Grade: C-.

Oblivion (out Apr 11) is reminiscent of Joseph Kosinski's debut feature - Tron: Legacy. He has created a cool, futuristic world and filled it with striking visuals, booming sound effects and a memorable music score. The film's emotional elements are undercooked but this is a science fiction flick to be enjoyed for its mystery and intrigue. Grade: B+.

Kon-Tiki (out Apr 11) recounts the 1947 story of two men who crossed the Pacific Ocean on a raft made of balsa wood. Two versions of this film were made! One in English (which is being released in Australia) and one in Norwegian (which was nominated at the Oscars). Grade: B-.
